SO what exactly is BYOVinyl anyway?
BYOVinyl started as an idea one night about 2 years ago when former ANT and long-time champion of music and community Chloe Riley sat down for dinner with Suzanne Miranda, owner of Nomadic Ant. They ate, they drank, and then there was the vision!!! That same night, filled with passion and wine, they sat on the floor of the shop making handmade record shaped flyers for the very first BYOVinyl night!
What do you all DO at BYOVinyl?
We ususally meet at Esquina at around 6:30PM – the FIRST Thursday of every month. Some of us come with records to play, some come with beers to share, some just dig through our collection of vinyl and pick out something they want to hear. We have everyone sign up, and we try to play at least a full side of the record depending how many folks are there. And we hang out.
And how many people usually show up?
We’ve had big crowds and we’ve had intimate groups of 5 people…ya just never know. Everyone is welcome, all music genres will be played, and the idea is for people to come hang out, meet one another while listening to some good music. Simple.
What’s the most obscure record you’ve played?
Not sure it’s obscure, but the Bird Songs Record that played bird songs from a single species of bird was pretty unusual.
How much does it cost?
BYOVinyl is free. Donations are always accepted and we use that cash to maintain the space, pay the rent, buy a new needle occasionally, stock the fridge with some water and cheap beers to share. Some people donate a record if they don’t have cash. We think that’s rad too!
